Loop
This route begins at the North Fork Highwood Trailhead near Thain Creek Campground and climbs immediately toward Center Ridge. The ascent is steep and sustained, quickly gaining elevation through forest and open grassy slopes before reaching the exposed ridgeline. From here, follow the ridge eastward as it undulates across high alpine terrain. Expect sections of light scrambling, wind exposure, and far-reaching views across the Highwood Mountains.
After traversing the ridge, descend on a southerly spur that connects with the North Fork Highwood Creek Trail. The route continues west along the creek, gradually descending through meadows and mixed forest. Intermittent water can be found along the lower trail. Wildflowers bloom in midsummer, and elk or mule deer are often spotted in open areas. This scenic loop through the Lewis and Clark National Forest offers a rewarding mix of challenging terrain and remote Montana backcountry.
