The Westgate Trail begins in the Copicut Woods / Miller Brook Conservation Area, part of the Southeastern Massachusetts Bioreserve near Fall River. Managed by The Trustees of Reservations, this easy route follows a wooded path through quiet terrain with minimal elevation change. From the trailhead on Indian Town Road, head north on Horseshoe Trail. When the trail curves back to Indian Town Road, turn right briefly, then turn left onto Miller Lane. After passing three intersections, continue straight where Miller Lane curves right—this former farm road leads past moss-covered stone walls and remnants of old homesteads, including foundations and fence lines.
After reconnecting with Miller Lane, head north again and turn left onto Shockley Trail, also known as Copicut Discovery Trail, to return to the trailhead via a stand of mature beech trees. Several trail junctions can be confusing—bring a map or GPS to stay oriented. The forest is dense and shaded, with seasonal wetlands, vernal pools, and occasional muddy stretches after rain. Dogs are welcome but must be kept on leash at all times. This trail is a quiet option for a mellow outing with a dose of regional history.
