This route begins at the Tamms Road parking area, following a faint path south toward Tamms Pond. After reaching the pond’s edge, continue southwest along unmarked but visible forest tracks to reach Highland Lake, the largest of the three bodies of water along this route. The terrain includes gentle rises and soft, occasionally muddy stretches through deciduous forest. From Highland Lake, turn east and then north to reach Sapno, passing a series of small clearings and potential dispersed campsites.
Navigation can be challenging due to sparse signage—bring a GPS or map and be alert at trail junctions. Some trails may be overgrown, especially in early spring or mid-summer. Wildlife sightings are common in the quieter sections, including waterfowl, songbirds, and whitetail deer. Return to the trailhead via the wooded path leading southwest from Beaver Pond.
This is a rewarding option for hikers looking for solitude, wildlife viewing, and pond-side walking in New York’s largest undeveloped state park.
