This route begins at the Weed Road Trailhead on the southern edge of Stewart State Forest, heading north along the road through a mix of hardwood canopy and open understory. After a short distance, turn left onto Orchard Trail, which winds gently through low hills and scattered wetlands. Stay right at the first Y-intersection to continue on Drakes Trail. The terrain remains relatively flat, with occasional muddy stretches depending on the season.
After winding along Drakes Trail connect to the Causeway Trail back towards Weed Rd and onto Windsor Trail. The route travels through broad meadows and brushy edges where old orchards may still be visible. After re-entering forest cover, take a right onto White Cloud Trail. This section trends southerly and gradually returns to Weed Rd and the trailhead. Occasional stream crossings may appear in spring and after storms, but are typically shallow. Wildlife sightings are common throughout—watch and listen for deer, wild turkeys, and woodland songbirds.
This accessible route offers a low-effort way to explore the varied terrain and quiet backwoods of one of the best day hikes near Newburgh.
