This moderate route begins at the Crystal Lake parking area off Temple Avenue in Newburgh, NY. From the trailhead, follow the main path along the lake’s edge, then veer uphill toward Snake Hill—also known as Muchattoes Hill—via a series of marked trails. The climb is steady and shaded, with the route winding through protected land managed by Scenic Hudson. At a Y-intersection near the ridgeline, stay right to continue ascending toward the summit. A short distance later, reach “Spy Rock,” a prominent outcrop offering panoramic views of the Hudson River, Newburgh, the Highlands, and Pollepel Island with Bannerman’s Castle.
To return, follow the Yellow Trail or paved access road downhill. The descent is steep in places and can be slick in wet or icy conditions. The route loops back to Crystal Lake without retracing all of your steps. Expect limited parking at the trailhead, no restrooms, and a carry-in/carry-out policy. This route is a great option for hikers looking for short, scenic day hikes in the Hudson Valley with a mix of history, urban contrast, and big river views.
