Loop
Starting near the Highland Lake Public Access Area off County Route 78, this wooded route links the Red, White, and Blue Trails with spur segments along Highland Lake. The route weaves through rolling forest terrain typical of the Catskills’ southern edge, offering frequent shade and short climbs over rocky tread. Early on, stay left at the first Y-intersection to follow the Red Trail clockwise. After a short distance, veer left onto the White Trail, which trends gently uphill through mixed hardwood stands.
The Blue Trail connects next, descending slightly before turning south toward Highland Lake. Occasional openings in the canopy reveal glimpses of the water through the trees. Near the lake’s edge, follow signs or blazes for the Highland Lake Trail, which parallels the shoreline briefly before curving back into the woods. From here, the route climbs modestly back to higher ground and reconnects with the Red Trail, returning to the original junction.
This moderate loop offers a peaceful forest walk with light elevation change, seasonal wildlife, and occasional lake views—ideal for a quiet half-day hike in the southern Catskills.
