There and Back
The Wintergreen Gorge Overlook route begins from the primary trailhead on Cooper Road in Harborcreek Township, with additional access from Penn State Behrend parking areas near the Prischak Educational Building. The route follows the Fourmile Creek Trail, an improved gravel and boardwalk path that parallels Fourmile Creek through forested gorge terrain and wetlands. Early sections are mostly flat and wide, suitable for strollers or wheelchairs in dry conditions. Several short side paths lead to creekside boardwalks and viewing areas, but hikers are encouraged to remain on the main trail to prevent erosion and protect sensitive habitats.
Farther along, the trail climbs gently to Devil’s Backbone — a narrow ridge with elevated views into the gorge. Past this overlook, the trail continues a short distance before ending near the upper reaches of the creek. Interpretive signs and frequent wildlife sightings highlight the area’s Natural Heritage status. With its easy access, diverse scenery, and proximity to campus, this is one of the best day hikes near Erie.
