Loop
This rugged out-and-back route begins at the Monroe Trailhead and ascends steadily through hardwood forest before climbing above treeline to the open summit of Camel’s Hump. From the summit, continue south along the Long Trail, following the ridgeline through exposed alpine zones and dense boreal forest toward Mount Ethan Allen. The terrain along this stretch is rocky and uneven, with several short but steep sections requiring careful footing. After passing Mount Ethan Allen, look for the signed junction near Wind Gap. Turn left here to begin the descent, following an unmaintained but navigable trail that reconnects with the Monroe Trail lower on the mountain.
Although the route forms a natural circuit, the descent from Wind Gap involves limited signage and may be overgrown in sections. Confident navigation and a map or GPS are strongly recommended. Water is scarce along the way, with only a few seasonal streams. The payoff is a full-value experience in Camel’s Hump State Park, with sweeping views, quiet ridgelines, and a mix of alpine and forest terrain.
