Loop
Starting from the main trailhead near the west end of the day-use parking area, this route offers a gentle walk through a patchwork of oak and pine forest on the North Shore of Long Island. Hikers follow well-marked paths that wind through dense woodland and open glades, with occasional spur trails leading toward overlooks above Long Island Sound. After a short distance, stay right at early junctions to remain on the main outer loop, bypassing shorter inner cutoffs. The route includes several wide, sandy stretches and well-maintained doubletrack, popular with both hikers and mountain bikers.
Although the terrain stays relatively flat, the trail’s outer sections feel remote thanks to thick tree cover and limited road noise. Keep an eye out for deer, foxes, and seasonal birds along the way. Water is available at developed sites near the park entrance, but there are no natural sources along the route. Open year-round and especially pleasant in spring and fall, this route is a relaxing option for coastal day hikes on Long Island.
