Loop
The Brookhaven State Park Loop begins at the main trailhead off Route 25 near Ridge, NY, and forms a broad circuit through one of Long Island’s quietest wooded areas. This easy route travels through sandy, mostly flat terrain typical of the Long Island Central Pine Barrens, with a mix of oak and pitch pine forest. From the trailhead, follow the wide dirt path north, staying right at early junctions to remain on the main loop. Around the halfway point, the trail weaves past old cranberry bogs and sections of denser woodland, with opportunities for birdwatching along the way. Some intersections may be unmarked, so navigation tools or maps are recommended.
Much of the loop sees light use, making it a quiet option for hikers, bikers, or horseback riders. In summer, vegetation can become overgrown and ticks are common, so spring and fall offer better trail conditions. There are no reliable water sources, and poison ivy is present in some areas. Despite the lack of major viewpoints or elevation gain, the Outer Loop offers a peaceful walk through unique pine barrens habitat.
