Those who are newer to hiking in the area and would like to start tackling some longer hikes this is a great trail to check out. Although still quite long (4.8 miles one way) the trail is a very light and easy grade, with a bit more strenuous hiking towards the end. Garfield Trail has two very minor stream crossings in the first mile that never pose a threat or danger.
Taking a right at the top for another .2 miles will bring you to the summit of Mt. Garfield which on a clear day gives sweeping views of Franconia Ridge and the Pemi Wilderness. You can even spot Mt. Washington in the distance if you're lucky! Additionally the foundation of an old fire watch tower remains at the top which on a windy day provides a nice wind breaker on the otherwise exposed summit.
This trail is great year-round, but be careful not to take Garfield Ridge by mistake when heading down. The ridge is more intense and much more dangerous in the winter.
