Description
The Lion Mountain Trail begins at the Lion Mountain Trailhead just west of downtown Whitefish, providing a well-maintained, forested route managed by Whitefish Legacy Partners. From the trailhead, follow the wide gravel path as it gently climbs through mixed conifer forest. Several well-marked connectors offer options to shorten or extend the route, all eventually rejoining the primary trail. Interpretive signs along the way highlight local ecology and land stewardship. About halfway through the loop, a short side trail leads to a scenic overlook with views of Whitefish Lake. The remainder of the trail rolls through quiet forest, offering frequent wildlife sightings, especially deer and songbirds. Expect occasional encounters with mountain bikers on shared-use segments. There are no natural water sources, so plan to carry what you need. This easy, accessible trail system is a great option for year-round hiking or snowshoeing close to town, with rewarding lake views and a peaceful woodland setting.
