Description
The Danny On Memorial Trail begins at the base area of Whitefish Mountain Resort and climbs steadily to the summit near the Summit House Lodge. The route follows a well-maintained path through subalpine forest and wildflower meadows, with several benches and interpretive signs along the way. At the first junction, stay right to continue on the main trail. From there, the grade steepens in sections but remains clear and easy to follow. As you ascend, views of the Flathead Valley open up, with occasional glimpses of Whitefish Lake below. In late June and July, wildflowers and beargrass often line the trail. Near the top, the forest thins and panoramic views stretch toward Glacier National Park, the Swan Range, and Flathead Lake. Hikers can return the way they came or opt to descend via chairlift during summer operating hours. There are no reliable water sources on this route—bring plenty and carry bear spray, as black bears frequent the area. This is one of the best day hikes near Whitefish for a moderate climb with rewarding views.
