Description
The Smith Lake via Swift Creek route starts and ends at the Swift Creek Trailhead, located north of Whitefish Lake in the Flathead National Forest. Follow the main trail as it climbs steadily along Swift Creek through dense forest, crossing several small streams. At the junction, head west toward Smith Lake. The trail becomes steeper here, passing through open hillsides with wide views of the Whitefish Range. Sections of the trail may be rocky or overgrown, with light scrambling possible in early season or wet conditions. Smith Lake is a scenic, forested lake that makes a quiet destination within easy reach of town. To complete the loop, head back toward the Swift Creek Trail the way you came in, then continue on the eastern side of the Swift Creek Loop to return to the trailhead. This route offers a peaceful hike with varied terrain, seasonal huckleberries, and consistent views across the surrounding mountains.
