This rugged route begins near Yorktown Road in Cronton-On-Hudson, NY, and explores a network of footpaths through Salt Hill State Forest. Starting from the roadside, follow the narrow trail leading into mixed hardwood forest. Within a short distance, begin climbing a rocky ridgeline that offers partial views—especially during leaf-off months—toward the Croton Reservoir. Continue navigating northwest along the ridge, occasionally requiring light bushwhacking. Old stone walls and the twisted remains of the Nelson Mountain Fire Tower emerge along the way.
After reaching the high point, descend back toward Blue Lake, an 8-acre reservoir bordered by overgrown summer cottage ruins and dotted with shoreline access points. From here, follow faint trails around the lake westward to complete the circuit, using terrain cues to stay oriented. Expect uneven footing, ticks, and limited signage throughout. The route crosses NYC watershed land—carry a valid, free DEP Access Permit. This quiet, lightly traveled hike rewards hikers with solitude, local history, and varied terrain.
