Description
The White & Green Trail at Hunter Brook Preserve begins at the trailhead on Fox Tail Lane in Yorktown Heights. Hike the white-blazed trail as it heads gently uphill into the preserve’s mixed hardwood forest. After a short distance, the trail parallels Hunter Brook—a clear-running tributary of the Croton Reservoir—through a riparian corridor lined with ferns, wetlands, and birdlife. Barred owls, wood thrush, and salamanders are commonly observed along this stretch. At a signed junction near the upper end of the preserve, the route returns via the green-blazed trail, which climbs briefly to a small upland ridge before descending back toward the trailhead. Expect a few muddy sections and narrow stream crossings, especially after recent rain. The trail’s mix of easy terrain and diverse habitats makes it a pleasant year-round hike close to town.
