Loop
Starting from the Hickory Hollow Trailhead, this route combines segments of Hickory Hollow Road, Townsend Trail, and Radio Road to form a moderate loop through the central region of Sterling Forest State Park. The hike begins on Hickory Hollow Road, a wide forest track that gently climbs through mixed hardwoods. At the first major Y-intersection, bear right onto the Townsend Trail, where the tread narrows and weaves through more rugged terrain. Continue past a few seasonal streambeds and remain on Townsend Trail until reaching the signed junction with Radio Road.
Turn right onto Radio Road, a historic fire access road that descends gradually back toward the starting point. Along this stretch, keep an eye out for deer, songbirds, and occasional filtered views of Sterling Lake through the trees. The loop ends by reconnecting with Hickory Hollow Road just before returning to the parking area. This is a quiet and accessible day hike option in the Hudson Highlands, ideal for exploring scenic woodland trails with minimal crowds.
