The Doris Duke Trail begins near the Doris Duke Wildlife Sanctuary parking area off Benjamin Meadow Road and winds southwest through a quiet stretch of Sterling Forest State Park. From the trailhead, follow the marked path as it gently climbs through hardwood forest and skirts the edges of wetlands. Within the first short distance, hikers enter a mix of open understory and shaded canopy, ideal for birdwatching in spring and fall migration seasons.
About halfway along the route, the trail crosses a series of seasonal streams before reaching a ridgeline offering filtered views of Sterling Lake and the rolling hills beyond. Several unsigned junctions appear along the way—stay on the Doris Duke Trail unless planning a longer route by connecting with adjacent trails like the Allis or Sterling Ridge Trails. Wildlife is common in this area, including white-tailed deer and occasional black bears. Poison ivy and ticks are prevalent in warmer months, and trail conditions can become muddy or icy during the shoulder seasons. The trail ends near a junction with other park routes, allowing for optional return or extension. This is a peaceful, moderately challenging hike through varied terrain, with rewarding views near the route’s highest point.
