Loop
The Furnace and Indian Hill Loop Trail begins at the Furnace Loop Trailhead Parking Area in Southfields, NY. From the trailhead, follow the yellow-blazed Indian Hill Loop Trail as it winds through a mixed hardwood forest before turning right at the red-blazed Furnace Hill Loop Trail. This trail decends quickly and winds past remnants of the 19th-century Sterling Furnace ironworks. After a short distance, the trail climbs casually over rocky terrain toward a junction with the yellow-blazed Indian Hill Trail. Turn right onto the Indian Hill Trail and continue uphill through dense woods, passing several open rock outcrops and seasonal viewpoints along the way.
After skirting the summit of Indian Hill, the trail gradually descends north and completes the loop, returning to the starting point. Expect sections of uneven footing, moderate elevation gain, and limited water sources along the route. This hike is best from late spring through fall when foliage and visibility are at their peak. Highlights include historical ruins, wildlife sightings, and forested solitude near NYC.
