This trail holds the best views you'll find at the !Oregon Trail Reserve in Southeast Boise. it leads along the rim of the Boise River canyon, granting views of the river and the diversion dam that begins Boise's huge canal system. The trail is steep and rocky in places, but for the most part it's a casual stroll. Take note that this terrain is very exposed to sun and to wind. Whatever the weather is for the day, it will likely feel more extreme up here on top of the cliffs.
You can reach this trail via the Ezra Meeker Loop or the Kelton Freight Trail. The Joel Palmer trail passes multiple overlooks until ending at one final viewpoint where you must turn around, because the fence just beyond marks private property. Going all the way to this point and back makes a somewhat strenuous hike or trail run that is perfect for an afternoon outing.
This trail is named for Joel Palmer, who traveled on the !Oregon Trail and became an influential politician in the Oregon Territory.
