Description
Julius Peak is a mountain in the Kaikoura Ranges. It is located in Nelson Lakes National Park. The peak is typically accessed via the Robert Ridge Route. This route passes by the summits of two other mountains along the way. This out and back hike is 9.44 miles long and gains 3,189 feet of elevation. This hike begins from a parking area at the end of Mount Robert Road. There is a toilet available here. Begin hiking Pinchgut Track. You will be hiking uphill in a forest. This section of the trail is very steep. Continue up switchbacks for 1.6 miles. Here you will pass by the summit of Mount Robert. The summit is marked by a large cairn. The trail flattens out a bit here. Continue on the trail for 0.2 miles to reach the Relax Shelter. This is a great place to sit and rest.Shortly after the shelter, you will come to a junction. Stay right on the Robert Ridge Route. The hike along the ridge offers wonderful mountain views. You will be hiking uphill again. After 1.8 miles, you will reach the summit of Flagtop. There is a blue post marking the summit. Continue on the Robert Ridge Route. There may be some loose rock on this section of the trail. Another mile of hiking will bring you to the base of Julius Peak. Leave the trail and begin the short scramble to the peak. Follow the path of least resistance. After 0.1 miles of scrambling, you will reach the summit. Enjoy the panoramic views here before turning around and retracing your steps to return to the parking area.Nelson Lakes National Park is open for hiking year round. There are no associated fees to hike here. Dogs are not allowed on this trail.
