Description
The Honeydew Track is a short and easy hike located in Nelson Lakes National Park near Saint Arnaud, Nelson-Tasman. This trail travels along the shore of Lake Rotoiti and loops into the forest. This loop is 1 mile long and gains 157 feet of elevation along the way.This hike starts from a parking area near the Kerr Bay Campsite. There are bathrooms available at the campsite. Begin hiking east into the forest. After a few hundred feet, you will encounter a junction with informational signs. These signs will give you information about the Rotoiti Nature Recovery Project. Go right at this junction onto the Bellbird Walk. This short loop trail is named after the New Zealand bellbird, a bird endemic to New Zealand.This part of the trail travels close to the shore of Lake Rotoiti. There are benches near the shore.After 0.1 miles, you will come to a junction and go right. Another 0.1 miles brings you to a second junction. Go right here to begin the Honeydew Loop. Along this section of trail, there are informational signs about the native flora and fauna. You will be walking in a beautiful forest. After 0.1 miles, you will come to a junction and go left. You will now be hiking gradually uphill. 0.4 more miles will bring you to another junction where you will head left. You will complete the Honeydew Loop after another 0.2 miles. Go right at this junction to head back toward the Bellbird Track. Take a right at the next junction to finish the other half of the Bellbird Track and return to the parking area.Nelson Lakes National Park is open for hiking year round. There are no associated fees to hike here. Dogs are not allowed on this trail.
