Description
Windy Peak is a very enjoyable but difficult hike that leads to a sandstone rock outcropping where a bit of scrambling is needed to reach the summit. It is one of three fantastic hikes that take off from the unsigned Mountain Springs Trailhead (the other two being Mountain Spring Peak and Hollow Rock Peak). The trail begins by following a rough 4x4 road up to a radio tower. This section climbs rather steeply and is the least enjoyable stretch of the trail. After the radio tower the trail turns to singletrack. You'll continue to gain elevation as you work your way to a junction. Keep straight (left) here. The trail will continue to climb along the ridge with views toward Charleston Peak and the distant Panamint Mountains of Death Valley until you reach a second junction. This is the one you want! Turn right. After topping out the trail begins the descent to Windy Peak. You'll be able to see the redish/orange colored sandstone outcropping below. The fun begins after you descend all the way to the base of the sandstone escarpment. To the left everything drops away and there is a great view to the valley floor. The official trail ends here and you'll need to find a route up to the top of Windy Peak. I'd recommend scurrying up the crack immediately in front of you (class 3, but fairly easy). After the initial crack scramble it is fairly smooth sailing. If using the onX Backcountry app to guide your way, don't be afraid to differ what is shown and find your own route up - that's half the fun.The summit of Windy Peak is obvious, and you'll find a register to sign. After enjoying the stunning views toward Las Vegas, return the way you came back to the trailhead.
