Hollow Rock Peak

Hollow Rock Peak is a difficult and fun hike that requires some easy class 3 scrambling to reach the summit, and an optional secondary summit that requires a difficult class 4+ scramble/climb to reach.The hike begins at the Mountain Springs Trailhead (two other hikes, Windy Peak and Mountain Spring Peak, also start from here). You'll follow a steep 4x4 road as it climbs up to a radio tower. After reaching the tower the trail turns to singletrack and is much more enjoyable.Continue following the trail as it gains elevation until you reach a junction. Although not signed, the junction is fairly obvious. Turn right. From here the trail is a bit of a roller coaster of ups and downs. In addition it is easy to lose the trail in places. If in doubt just continue to follow the ridge as it heads toward Hollow Rock Peak (visible in the distance).The trail eventually starts to resemble class two terrain as you reach the rocky ridge of Hollow Rock. Follow the faint path until it peters out altogether. You'll then start seeing carins. These carins can be a lifesaver as they will direct you the easiest way through the upcoming class 3 terrain. Follow them and avoid climbing high on the ridgeline to the left.The true summit of Rock Hollow is to the right of the main ridge. An easy scramble will take you to the top where you'll find a register to sign. The best views however are found at the end of the escarpment, and you'll also find a secondary summit here that is very difficult to reach (I'd say more of a short climb than a scramble). Even if you don't top out on the secondary summit, be sure to hike over there to enjoy the amazing views down toward Las Vegas.Return the way you came, following the cairns until you pick up the trail again. Remember that it's not all downhill on the way back, you'll still have a bit of climbing to do to get back to the main junction, so save some energy and water for that.
