Description
The hike to Mountain Spring Peak is somewhat difficult, but well worth it as the views from trail are simply outstanding, not to mention the 360 degree summit views.Begin by parking at the unsigned Mountain Springs Trailhead, just off Nevada State Road 160. The trail begins by following a rough 4x4 road up to a radio tower. This section is steep in places and definitely the least enjoyable portion of the trail. Once past the radio tower the trail turns into singletrack. The elevation gain continues although not as steeply as before. You'll soon come to a junction - unsigned but obvious. Continue straight (slight left) to stay on the trail to Mountain Spring Peak. Another junction awaits shortly up the trail, again continue straight (slight left) to stay on route. Immediately after this second junction you'll crest out and come to a fantastic viewpoint down to the Las Vegas Strip below. From here to Mountain Spring Peak the trail can be a bit difficult to follow in places as it continues along the ridge. Although a well defined tread is usually apparent, in places it peters out or splits into two. In situations where the trail splits in two follow the more apparent tread, although both trails will likely merge again. The summit of Mountain Spring is obvious, although it can be missed as the main trail traverses just below the true summit - so be sure to keep an eye out for it! Although views have already been great along this trail, the summit views are simply incredible. You'll have a 360 degree view of nearby mountain ranges in Nevada, Utah, Arizona and California, as well as a fantastic view down to Las Vegas below.Once you've enjoyed your time on the summit, turn around and enjoy the downhill hike back to your vehicle.
