There and Back

The route begins at the Timpanogos Trailhead (Aspen Grove) at 6,919' on UT-92 in the South Fork of American Fork Canyon and finishes at the summit of Mount Timpanogos at 11,749'. From the parking area, follow Mount Timpanogos Trail #052 north and west through aspen forest and open meadows. The first mile gains elevation gradually before the trail steepens into a series of switchbacks climbing through Primrose Cirque. Several waterfalls are visible from the trail on the ascent.

At approximately 4.3 miles, the trail reaches the Hidden Lakes area and transitions to open, rocky alpine terrain. Continue across the high meadows approximately 0.2 miles to Emerald Lake at 10,380'. At the lake, the trail junctions with Timpooneke Trail #053 arriving from the north — turn right (west) onto Timpanogos Summit Trail #054. The summit trail climbs 1,369 vertical feet over approximately 1.3 miles on a broad, increasingly exposed ridge with steep drop-offs on both sides.

Snowfields above Emerald Lake are present through mid-summer and are hazardous before consolidation — an ice axe may be appropriate before mid-July. The stone shelter hut near the summit serves as a final landmark before the short talus scramble to the true highpoint. Retrace your steps to return.
