Description
Scout Falls is one of the finest waterfalls in Utah, and it is located on the north side of Mount Timpanogos in a picturesque valley circled by alpine peaks. Heading due south from the Timpooneke Trailhead toward Roberts Horn, it becomes immediately clear the hike will be beautiful. If you head out in the early summer, you will be greeted with bright green valley walls and the iconic horizontal slate-style rocks that make up Mount Timpanogos. The trail climbs steadily. The views down the canyon are phenomenal as you look north toward Box Elder Peak and White Baldy. The waterfall itself would be worth the hike, even without the stunning surroundings. During peak melt the falls drops from several different angles. After the initial drop, the stream continues to cascade down a series of boulders and then flow out of the valley. This place looks more like the Swiss Alps than northern Utah, especially if there is still snow on the nearby peaks. There are great wildflowers, birds, butterflies and hummingbirds along the trail. Moose and deer also frequent the area. Like the Alpine Loop, this trail will provide wonderful autumn color. There is a $6 fee to access the trailhead. Keep Stewart Falls in mind, as well as the many other adventures in this area, since the trip to Scout Falls is so short. Dogs are allowed on leash, and this hike can definitely be done by kids. There are some potential snow crossings depending on the time of year as well as some small creek crossings, but they are generally easy to make. Just beyond the trailhead is a three-way split. Take the middle fork, which is trail number 053. There is a weather protected map on site to help visitors navigate.
