This is a great route for anyone looking for a steep climb up rugged terrain, followed by a pleasant loop with views of Big Tujunga and the Arroyo Seco. The trail is suitable for running and hiking. From the parking area located off Angeles Crest Highway (CA-2), take the Hoyt Mountain Road Trail. At the first trail junction stay to the right and head northeast towards George's Gap (staying fairly parallel to Angeles Crest Highway). Begin the steep and rugged climb up the west ridge of Hoyt Mountain from Tank Saddle. You will descend the east ridge of Hoyt Mountain toward George's Gap. Before reaching the parking area near Angeles Crest Highway (CA-2), turn left (away from George's Gap) and follow the World Of Chaparral Trail for 1 mile. Once you reach the Telephone Trail, turn left. The Telephone Trail leads around the base of the mountain back to Tank Saddle. Retrace your steps along Hoyt Mountain Road Trail back to the starting point. GETTING TO THE TRAILHEADGrizzly Flat Trailhead is located off of Angeles Crest Highway (CA-2). If you are coming from La Canada Flintridge the trailhead will be on the left.SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONSThe route is fully exposed with no shade. Plan to bring and carry all necessary water.
