Description
Hoyt Mountain East Ridge Loop is a 3.5-mile loop that goes to the top of Hoyt Mountain (4456') and around its base. Enjoy panoramic views and plenty of solitude on this exciting, adventurous summit. It's a short, but challenging hike to the top of a lesser-known mountain in Angeles National Forest. The trail is suitable for running and hiking. Whatever route you take to climb Hoyt Mountain, you will have to ascend steep ridges. The ascent from George's Gap illustrates that perfectly. Head west up the ridge by following a faint use trail from the base of the mountain. You will descend to a saddle after .4 miles and then climb to the summit. On the steep and rugged east ridge of Hoyt Mountain, you'll gain about 800 feet of elevation within the first 1/2 mile. From the top of the mountain, descend the west ridge. Upon reaching a water tank, turn right and follow the Telephone Trail around the east side of Hoyt Mountain. Turn right at the next trail junction and follow the World Of Chaparral Trail back to George's Gap. SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONSThe route is fully exposed with no shade. Plan to bring and carry all necessary water. Adventure Pass required for parking. For more information about Angeles National Forest's passes and permits please visit, https://www.fs.usda.gov/main/angeles/passes-permits/recreation. GETTING TO THE TRAILHEADGeorge's Gap Trailhead is located off of Angeles Crest Highway (CA-2). If you are coming from La Canada Flintridge the trailhead will be on the left and it is marked by a sign and a paved parking area.
