Description
The Mt. Lukens Loop is a 20 mile, mostly single track, route within the Angeles National Forest and is rated as very difficult due to the length and the overall elevation gain. Adventurers will be rewarded with expansive mountain views and native desert plants. The route is mostly through exposed areas with little shade. Make sure to bring plenty of water. The route is popular amongst hikers, runners, backpackers, and mountain bikers. Stone Canyon is not as popular or crowded as other areas of the Angeles National Forest, even on the weekends you may not encounter many people. Start at George's Gap trailhead, a paved parking lot off of Highway 2. From the trailhead begin with a steep climb to the top of Mount Hoyt. Enjoy the views from the top and then follow the well trodden foot path down the mountain to connect with the Grizzly Flat Trail. Follow Grizzly Flat Trail (which is a wide fire road) to the top of Mt. Lukens. Descend the mountain via Stone Canyon Trail, a single track on the east side of the mountain. When you reach the Stone Canyon parking area you will continue for a short distance on Stonyvale Road which connects back to the Grizzly Flat Trail. Logistics Parking is available at George's Gap. There is seasonal flowing water in Stone Canyon but don't rely on that or any potable water.
