Description
The Grizzly Flat Trail is an 8-mile out-and-back that runs between Angeles Crest Highway (CA-2) and Big Tujunga. It features a solid climb within a relatively short distance and traverses an area of the forest that feels more rugged and remote than some of the nearby trails. The Grizzly Flat Trail can be reached from Dark Canyon located off of Angeles Crest Highway (CA-2) about 6 miles from La Canada Flintridge. The trailhead has a small parking area and is located right off highway. Start by ascending the Dark Canyon Trail, which makes a short, steep climb to dirt road 2N80. After crossing 2N80, descend another dirt road toward Grizzly Flat. In about 1.8 miles, you will reach Grizzly Flat, a prominent sloping bench on the mountainside. As you may have guessed from the name, Grizzly Bears once roamed this rugged and remote region of Angeles National Forest, particularly in the Big Tujunga area. Sadly, these giant bears are no longer found in Angeles National Forest or in the state of California. In 1916, the last grizzly bear south of the Tehachapi Mountain Range was killed in the lower Big Tujunga area. As of today, the only place you can find grizzly bears in California is on the state flag.As the trail leaves Grizzly Flat, it descends towards Big Tujunga Creek. The appearance of creek crossings along the way may vary depending on the season and whether it has been a dry or snowy winter. Stonyvale Picnic Area is a great place to take a break before turning around, retracing your steps, and hiking back up to the parking area.ALTERNATE ROUTESTo shorten the route you will need to arrange a car shuttle to meet you at Stonyvale Picnic Area. The picnic area is accessible off of Big Tujunga Canyon Road. The description in this post begins from Angeles Crest Highway (CA-2), however, it can be completed in the opposite direction starting from Big Tujunga.
