Loop
This moderate route begins at the Moose Hill Wildlife Sanctuary Visitor Center and heads west on the Billings Loop Trail. After a short distance, turn right onto the Summit Trail, which also follows the Bay Circuit Trail through hardwood forest and gentle terrain. After descending from Moose Hill, turn right onto the Turkey Trail and continue through shaded woods and rolling hills. Pass junctions with the Forest Trail, then make another right onto the Bluff Trail. This section features several notable landmarks, including Allen’s Ledge, Bluff Hill, and a historic cistern, along with scenic overlooks across the surrounding landscape.
Stay on the Bluff Trail as it winds downhill and reconnects with the Billings Loop near the sanctuary’s red maple swamp. Boardwalks in this area can be slippery when wet or icy. Follow the Billings Loop back to the visitor center to complete the route. The sanctuary’s blend of forest, meadow, and wetland habitats makes this one of the more varied day hikes near Boston, especially for wildlife and bird-watching. Pets are not allowed, and an entry fee is required for non-members.
