Description
The Futures Trail begins near the entrance to Mt Ascutney State Park and climbs steadily through dense northeastern hardwood forest toward the summit of Mount Ascutney. From the trailhead, the route follows a clear path uphill, weaving through fern-lined understory and over occasional rocky footing. The trail parallels the park road to the summit, and this route can be shortened by using one of the pulloffs to access the trail. As the route nears the upper slopes, the grade steepens and the trail becomes increasingly rocky and uneven. Near the top, a short spur leads to a scenic stone lookout platform with expansive views across the Connecticut River Valley. The summit itself offers panoramic views of the Green Mountains, White Mountains, and beyond, making the challenging climb worthwhile. This route is especially popular during peak fall foliage when the forest canopy explodes in color.
