There and Back
Climb through forest and past waterfalls to reach sweeping summit views from a historic fire tower.
The Weathersfield Trail begins at a small parking area off High Meadow Road and climbs steadily toward the summit of Mount Ascutney. The route starts with a moderate ascent through hardwood forest, passing seasonal streams before reaching Cascade Falls less than a mile from the trailhead. Past the falls, the trail steepens and climbs over a series of stone steps and switchbacks into steeper and rockier terrain. The trail remains well marked, but footing can be uneven and slick in wet weather. Near the summit, hikers emerge at the base of a historic fire tower. Climb the tower stairs for panoramic views stretching across southern Vermont and into New Hampshire.
This is a moderately strenuous hike with a sustained climb, best tackled from late spring through fall. Water may be available near Cascade Falls early in the season, but is unreliable later—carry plenty. Backcountry camping is allowed in designated areas, though no facilities are available. This route rewards persistent hikers with varied terrain, rich forest scenery, and one of the best summit views in southern Vermont.
