There and Back
The State Game Land 45 Rail Trail begins near Van at a gated access point off Route 322 and follows an abandoned railroad grade east through wooded terrain in Pennsylvania State Game Land Number 45. The route ends at Kline Road, offering a relatively flat walk or ride on a packed dirt and gravel surface. From there, users typically return along the same route, with options to explore informal connectors to other service roads or multi-use trails within SGL 45.
Across Route 322 to the west, hikers can access the Sandy Creek Trail. To the east, the Clarion Highlands Trail can be reached by following Kline Road, Route 322, and Camp Coffman Road, as the former railroad corridor crosses private property. The trail passes through dense forest and active wildlife habitat typical of Western PA game lands, with seasonal conditions like mud in spring or snow in winter. Hunting is permitted in the area, so wearing blaze orange is strongly recommended during open seasons. This is a quiet, straightforward route for hiking, biking, or trail running year-round.
