This easy route begins at the Cabot Street parking area for the J.C. Phillips Nature Preserve in Beverly, MA. From the trailhead, follow the main path directly into the woods and continue straight onto the Phillips Loop. The route forms a wide loop through the 85-acre preserve, winding through a mix of hardwood forest, wetlands, and sections with views of Wenham Lake. Stay on the outer loop to complete the full circuit, which returns to the starting point without requiring backtracking.
Along the way, hikers can shorten the route using inner connecting trails or take a spur trail to the site of the former Phillips Mansion. A longer detour on the South Carriage Loop adds variety for those looking for more distance. Trails are unpaved and may be muddy or root-covered in sections, and poison ivy is present along trail edges. The area is known for bird activity, with occasional owl and bald eagle sightings. Open year-round and dog-friendly on leash, this relaxed route offers a quiet forest escape close to town.
