This easy route begins and ends at the parking area off Holmes Road in Pittsfield, MA, on land managed by Mass Audubon. The trail weaves through a gentle network of paths, including segments of the Sacred Way and Wolf Pine trails, to form a varied circuit through Canoe Meadows Wildlife Sanctuary. From the trailhead, head into the woods on Carriage Road and stay right at the first junction to follow Sacred Way Trail toward the Housatonic River. Continue along this low-lying section, then rejoin Carriage Road to circle around West Pond. After passing the pond, continue east and turn left onto Wolf Pine Trail. Follow this wooded section or take a short detour right on Owl Trail before reconnecting with Carriage Road and returning to the parking area. Some inner trails cross boardwalks and may pass through seasonally flooded sections—especially near Sackett Brook and along Sacred Way.
The route’s flat grade and wide paths make it ideal for casual walks, birding, and wildlife viewing. Turtles, otters, herons, and songbirds are common, and beaver activity is often visible near oxbow ponds and floodplains. Trails are open year-round from dawn to dusk. Expect muddy or soft ground after rain, and check for seasonal closures during high water. Pets are not allowed, and off-trail travel is prohibited to protect sensitive wetland habitat. This tranquil walk offers a close-up look at diverse ecosystems in the heart of the Berkshires.
