Description
The Washington Mountain Marsh Trail begins at the intersection of West Branch Road and Schoolhouse Road in October Mountain State Forest. Managed by the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation, this easy route travels through mixed forest, marsh meadow, and peat-bottom wetlands shaped by beaver activity. Hikers can follow the clearly marked route north out of the parking area and wind either way around the marsh on boardwalks to return to the starting point. Conditions can vary—muddy tread, slippery sections, and narrow crossings are common, especially after rain. Interpretive signage and an online brochure describe native and invasive wetland species, peat soil, and local wildlife. The trail’s blend of habitats makes it a good option for birding or casual wildlife viewing.
