There and Back
This rugged section of the Long Trail begins at Appalachian Gap and climbs to a ridgeline leading past Stark Mountain to Mount Ellen, offering a rewarding stretch of alpine hiking through the Green Mountains. The route climbs immediately from the trailhead, ascending steep, rocky terrain through hardwood forest before reaching Stark Mountain. Continue along the spine of the ridge, navigating short scrambles and uneven tread as the trail rises and dips across subpeaks and wooded saddles. Along this stretch, the canopy intermittently open to views across Champlain Valley.
The final push toward Mount Ellen includes brief alpine stretches and more sustained climbing before reaching the summit area, marked by a ski lift terminal and expansive views. The true high point is unmarked and slightly off the ski trails but easily accessible. Return the way you came or descend via side trails like the Jerusalem Trail for a point-to-point outing. While this is one of the best alpine hikes near Burlington, it demands careful footing, especially in wet weather.
