There and Back
This section of Vermont’s Long Trail begins at Appalachian Gap on VT Route 17 and follows the white-blazed trail north along a rocky, forested ridgeline. The route starts with a steady climb through northern hardwood forest before reaching exposed ledges with views to the west. After passing Molly Stark Mountain, continue along the undulating ridge to Molly Stark’s Balcony, a narrow overlook perched above the forest canopy with panoramic views of the Champlain Valley and Adirondacks.
The trail includes short, steep pitches and rugged footing typical of the Long Trail, with several rocky scrambles that may require the use of hands. Watch for trail junctions but stay on the Long Trail at all times. Water sources are minimal and typically unreliable, so carry what you need for the full outing. Return by retracing your steps along the same trail. This segment offers one of the quieter day hikes in the Green Mountains, with rewarding views and a true backcountry feel.
