Colorado Trail: Segment 14

Segment 14 of the Colorado Trail is a point-to-point, multi-use trail measuring approximately 20.2 miles from the Chalk Creek Trailhead to US Highway 50. Traveling through the southern end of the Sawatch Range, the route features rolling terrain, lush forests, flowing creeks, and waterfalls. The segment begins with an initial climb, followed by several flat and gentle miles before descending to Highway 50, which provides scenic views of the northern Sangre de Cristo Mountains. This segment offers access to several prominent 14,000-foot peaks, including Mount Antero (14,276 feet), Mount Shavano (14,231 feet), and Tabeguache Peak (14,162 feet). Key trail junctions and water sources along the route include crossings at Little Browns Creek (mile 6.0), Fourmile Creek (mile 9.0), Sand Creek (mile 9.8), the Mount Shavano Trail junction (mile 12.3), and the Angel of Shavano Trailhead (mile 14.5). Water is available from multiple creek crossings, though proper filtration is required. The trail is open to hikers, backpackers, equestrians, and mountain bikers, except where designated wilderness regulations apply. Established campgrounds and backcountry campsites are located along the route, with vehicular shuttle access available at the Chalk Creek Trailhead, Browns Creek Trailhead, Angel of Shavano Trailhead, and the US Highway 50 Trailhead.
