The Sierra and Freedom Trails begin at the trailhead off Red Schoolhouse Road near the entrance to Stony Kill Environmental Education Center, just outside Fishkill, New York. The Sierra Trail forms a short loop through a mix of open meadows and deciduous forest, with well-marked footpaths and minimal elevation change. Early on, the route passes interpretive signage that highlights native plants and conservation topics.
To reach the Freedom Trail from the south, hikers can head north on the Woodland Connector Trail, which branches off from the Sierra Trail near the farm area. This connector crosses both Baxtertown Road and Stonykill Road with a quiet wooded corridor in between. After reentering forested terrain, the path meets the southern end of the Freedom Trail forming a short spur that winds through a shaded section of forest.
Dogs are permitted on leash, and the route is accessible year-round, though sections can become muddy or snow-covered depending on the season. This is a good option for families or casual day hikers looking for a low-key outing close to the Hudson Valley corridor.
