Biotic Loop Trail

The Biotic Loop Trail at White Dome Nature Preserve is a short, easy hike that will take you through a sampling of the rolling terrain found within the preserve. This 800 acre preserve is home to a special plant - the dwarf bear poppy (named so because of its paw-shaped leaf). This plant grows nowhere other than here in Washington County. Unfortunately this poppy only blooms from around late April to mid May. If you miss the bloom season the White Dome Nature Preserve isn't all that exciting, but it is still worth a stop if you are in the area.The Biotic Loop Trail begins from the trailhead, where you'll then take a right a continue through the tunnel that leads under the road. You'll emerge on the other side and soon come to the start of the loop portion of the trail.You can hike the trail clockwise or counter-clockwise. You'll drop very slightly in elevation as the trail traverses over the gently rolling, barren hills. Without the dwarf bear poppies in bloom the landscape here is rather unexciting. You will however have some great views in the direction of St. George and of the red rock hills and mountains beyond.The trail will eventually loop its way back around and rejoin the familiar track that leads back under the highway and to the parking lot. If hiking the Biotic Trail Loop be sure to stay on trail to help protect the biological crust, and be sure to bring water and sunscreen (especially if hiking in the summer) as the area is barren and exposed.
