There and Back
The Buck Mountain Fire Tower Trail starts from a designated parking area along South Sabattis Circle Road, just off NY‑30 west of Long Lake. The route heads through mixed forest on a well-built path, crossing wet ground via bridges and wooden walkways. After a gradual beginning, the trail steepens as it approaches the summit, where wooden steps and stone staircases aid the climb. Though the summit itself is forested, hikers can ascend the restored 60-foot fire tower—originally built in 1933—for sweeping views of the William C. Whitney Wilderness and nearby lakes.
This short but moderately challenging route is suitable for most hikers, including families. It crosses private land via public easement, so camping, fires, and motorized use are prohibited. Dogs are allowed on leash. Snowshoeing is popular in winter, and traction is advised in icy conditions. With a well-marked trail and a scenic reward at the top, this is one of the best half-day hikes in the Adirondack Park.
