There and Back
This moderate route begins where the Appalachian Trail crosses Vermont Route 12 north of Woodstock, and follows a well-marked forest path through hardwood stands and open fern glades. The treadway climbs gradually, with a few steeper pitches as it gains elevation along the ridgeline. Early in the hike, limited openings in the trees offer partial views of the surrounding Green Mountains. Continue past Arms Hill, where filtered vistas appear through the forest canopy, and Wayside Road before reaching the Winturri Shelter—a classic log structure maintained for overnight camping and a good midpoint rest spot.
Beyond the shelter, the trail continues a short distance to The Pinnacle, an elevated ridge offering partial views over the rolling Vermont countryside. Hikers can enjoy the overlook before retracing their steps south to the trailhead. Seasonal streams near the shelter may provide water, but treatment is necessary. This section of the Appalachian Trail delivers a quiet backcountry experience typical of day hikes in the Green Mountains—rewarding those who appreciate forest solitude and gentle ridgeline scenery.
