There and Back
This route begins from the Appalachian Trail access point on Stage Road just outside South Pomfret. From the trailhead, follow the white-blazed Appalachian Trail northbound as it climbs gradually through a mix of hardwood forest and dense spruce stands. The route sticks to a ridgeline most of the way, offering a quiet, lightly traveled stretch of the AT through the Green Mountain National Forest.
The forest opens slightly near Dana Hill, and some views may emerge through the trees when foliage is sparse. Dana Hill's summit is wooded, but hikers can continue a short distance to a filtered vista. Moose, deer, and a variety of songbirds are common in this area. Return the way you came, descending to Stage Road.
This is a quieter alternative to busier day hikes in Vermont, especially for those looking to explore a less-traveled section of the Appalachian Trail.
