The Bear Lake to Baree Lakes Trail begins and ends at the Bear Lake Trailhead near Noxon, MT, offering a rugged alpine route through the Cabinet Mountains Wilderness. From the trailhead, follow the well-defined path to Bear Lake, a scenic destination framed by steep granite walls. Beyond Bear Lake, the route climbs steadily toward a high pass with panoramic views of the Cabinet Range. After crossing the pass, descend toward the Baree Lakes, a pair of striking turquoise alpine lakes nestled in a rocky basin. From Baree Lakes, the trail curves through subalpine forest and open meadows filled with seasonal wildflowers, eventually rejoining the trail leading back to Bear Lake. Expect steep, rocky tread in sections, with loose talus and lingering snowfields possible into mid-summer. The area is rich with wildlife—mountain goats, black bears, and moose are frequently spotted—so carrying bear spray is strongly advised. This remote route rewards hikers with solitude, varied terrain, and classic Northern Rockies scenery.
