There and Back
The Kootenai Falls Trail begins at the well-signed Kootenai Falls Picnic Area off US Hwy. 2 between Libby and Troy in northwestern Montana. From the trailhead, follow a wide, packed dirt path through shaded forest toward the sound of rushing water. After a short distance, the trail splits, stay left to reach the swinging bridge.
The swinging bridge crosses high above the Kootenai River, offering impressive views upstream and down into the steep-walled canyon. The trail then leads to a fenced overlook and rocky benches where the river plunges over a broad series of ledges, creating one of the largest free-flowing waterfalls in the state. Use caution near the edges, especially during spring runoff when the water runs high and fast. Wildlife is frequently spotted in the area, including bald eagles soaring above the gorge. This route is best enjoyed from late spring through fall when paths are clear of snow and ice.
