Starting at the Flower Creek Trailhead southwest of Libby, this demanding backcountry route climbs steadily through forested slopes before reaching open terrain along the Cabinet Divide. The route follows a combination of Forest Service Trails #139 and #140, connecting via the Parmenter Tie Trail and a section of the Cabinet Divide Trail. At a Y-intersection shortly after the initial climb, veer right to begin a clockwise circuit. Expect steep ascents and occasional scrambling as the trail climbs toward high alpine ridges. Along the way, you'll encounter broad meadows filled with summer wildflowers and sweeping views of the Purcell and Cabinet Mountains.
Ridge-top sections offer impressive vistas but require careful footing and occasional route-finding across exposed terrain. Some trail junctions lack signage—carry a GPS or a reliable map and compass. Water can be found at Flower Creek and in several upper drainages, but the divide itself is dry—plan accordingly. Wildlife sightings are common, including moose, black bears, and mountain goats. This high-elevation route offers a remote and challenging experience for hikers prepared for exposure, navigation, and variable mountain weather.
