There and Back
The Baldy Lake Trail begins at the Baldy Lake Trailhead and climbs steadily through subalpine forest and meadows toward Baldy Lake, a scenic high-alpine basin tucked beneath the rocky north slopes of Baldy Mountain. After passing through intermittent stands of spruce and open hillsides with seasonal wildflowers, the route reaches Baldy Lake, a reliable water source and common turnaround point for day hikers and backpackers.
Prior to reaching the lake, there is an unmarked but well-traveled climber’s route that ascends Baldy Mountain. The terrain transitions to talus and tundra above tree line, requiring off-trail navigation and occasional use of hands for balance. The summit offers panoramic views across the Anaconda-Pintler Wilderness, including distant peaks to the south and rugged ridgelines to the north. This route is best completed from July through September, with reliable water below the summit and high potential for wildlife sightings along the way.
